We make a lot of decisions as homeschool parents.
Which books we’re reading. What needs to get done today. When it’s time to move on to the next math lesson.
Even in our homeschool which is largely built around my children’s interests, there are plenty of things that can feel like it’s all up to me to decide how our days go.
It’s why I love finding little places where we can hand the decision-making over to them.
And art is a perfect place to do it.
What Happens When Our Kids Get To Choose In Our Homeschool?
Here’s a quick tip for how this can work in your homeschool:
Open up the Chalk Pastel membership and tell your kids they get to choose.
That’s it.
You don’t have to steer them toward the lesson that matches your history curriculum or pick the one that goes with the season.
And please, don’t worry about whether what they choose is educational enough (there is plenty of time for that!).
Just ask:
“What do you want to create today?”
You might be surprised by what happens next.
Your child may immediately know exactly what they want to watch while their sibling might spend ten minutes scrolling through lessons before something catches their eye.
They might choose a topic you never would’ve thought to suggest (and that’s part of the fun).
When our kids get to choose, something shifts. It’s their project and their own learning.
And with hundreds of Nana’s video art lessons to choose from, there’s plenty of room to follow wherever their interests lead.
So maybe this week, don’t plan the art lesson.
Let them choose it.
