A Dog’s Life by Ann M. Martin
If you have an animal lover, this book is a wonderful one. It is written from the point of view of a dog named Squirrel. She shares the story of her life. “The long ago days-the days of Mother and Bone and the shed-have become fuzzy and have blended with images of Moon, of my travels, of other people and houses, of hiding places; a tangle of memories leading to Susan. I burrow into her side and listen to her heartbeat. With my eyes closed, I might be in the straw-filled wheelbarrow again, nestled against Mother, listening to the first heartbeat I knew. I open my eyes and tilt my head back to look at Susan’s lined face. She smiles at me, and we sit pressed into each other, two old ladies.” Ann M. Martin p. 182

Rain Reign by Ann M. Martin
Rain Reign is written from the point of view of an eleven year old girl named Rose Howard. She has higher functioning autism and not everyone understands her, including her single father. Rose has three things that are important to her:
- Words (especially homonyms)
- Rules
- Numbers (especially prime numbers)
Her father brings Rose a new dog and she names her Rain (which is a homophone). Rain becomes Rose’s best friend. A terrible storm takes place in the story, Rain gets out, and does not return. Rose searches for her, using her gifts, but at the same time has to step out of her comfort zone and routines to try and find her. A tear jerker.
