A Winter Homeschool Snowflake Study With Snowflake Bentley

Enjoy a winter snowflake study for your homeschool! Fun learning with a Snowflake Bentley read aloud, online winter art lessons and snowflake activities.

This winter homeschool snowflake study combines the beauty of winter with the fascinating life of Snowflake Bentley.

In our part of New England, the arrival of the first snow is greatly anticipated. It can happen as early as October or as late as January. We watch the sky and weather reports eagerly for this delightful precipitation.

What is this somewhat magical weather phenomenon that turns ordinary dreary rainfall into a puffy playscape for kids of all ages?

It seems hard to believe it’s simply the temperature dropping! Yet, it really is that simple. Let the red line drop below thirty-two degrees and our dreams of a white winter crystalize into reality! Our breath plumes white to match the snow, and suddenly the world is renewed!

In our house, my boys have their boots on as soon as there’s a skim of snow to make tracks in. Snow angels, snowmen, snow ball fights, and sledding take up hours of their time until they’ve quite worn the snow out!

Whether you get snow in your area or not, you can create a winter snowflake study of this beautiful white fluffy stuff in your homeschool this year! Just gather a few simple materials to show your kids the wonder of these winter crystals.

“The snow crystals . . . come to us not only to reveal the wondrous beauty of the minute in Nature, but to teach us that all earthly beauty is transient and must soon fade way. But though the beauty of the snow is evanescent, like the beauties of the autumn, as of the evening sky, it fades but to come again.” ― Wilson A. Bentley

Learning About Snowflakes

There is no person better to start learning about snowflakes from than the man who dedicated his life to capturing these ephemeral water-stars.

Wilson Bentley of Vermont said, “… from the beginning, it was the snowflakes that fascinated me most.” We agree, snowflakes are simply mesmerizing!

Wilson Bentley’s website contains a rich and lengthy biography, as well as several articles about snowflakes written by Bentley himself. Bookmark this site for some “mother culture” reading time as you plan your homeschool snowflake study. Bentley’s articles are written with as much beauty as their subject matter.

Snowflake Bentley Homeschool Read Aloud

As the first person to ever capture a snowflake’s intricacy on camera, Wilson Bentley’s passion for snowflakes earned him the nickname “Snowflake Bentley.” His story is best enjoyed in the picture book by the same name.

This read-aloud book is distinctive in that it uses two side-by-side narratives to share Snowflake Bentley’s story. The narrative under the woodcut illustrations lyrically tells the story of Bentley’s life and passion for snow. The margin text adds facts and scientific details that help the reader understand the excitement and importance of Bentley’s work.

Bentley grew from a young boy who loved snow to a teenager who pursued his passions to a young man who determinedly persevered through failures. He knew there were “treasures in the snow” and he would gift these treasures to the world.

And so he did. After decades of effort, he had a vast collection of snowflake photos compiled into a book: Snow Crystals. From passionate child to “snowflake authority” figure, Snowflake Bentley’s story is both endearing and insightful.

Under the microscope, I found that snowflakes were miracles of beauty; and it seemed a shame that this beauty should not be seen and appreciated by others. Every crystal was a masterpiece of design and no one design was ever repeated. When a snowflake melted, that design was forever lost. Just that much beauty was gone, without leaving any record behind.” — Wilson Bentley

A Snowflake Bentley Study For All Ages In Your Homeschool

After reading about the startling beauty of snowflakes, children will definitely want to explore more!

My boys took turns creating chalk pastel paintings to celebrate all things snow.

We started with the lesson on Snowflake Bentley and his camera. This lesson is perfect for older students because it’s a bit more intricate.

The preschool lesson on snowflakes in Snow Clubhouse is short and sweet and delightful for beginners or younger students. Even a few minutes of painting with Nana helps kids to pause for a moment and consider the wonder of these tiny, transient winter gems. Nana’s patient instruction guides kids to wonder at the uniqueness of snowflakes as they draw.

Bird in Snow is the perfect lesson to connect snowflakes to wildlife in your backyard – plus it uses black paper like Bentley’s black snowflake tray! The contrast of the chalk pastels on different colored backgrounds is stunning.

These snowy treasures of Bentley’s are well-celebrated in Nana’s Chalk Pastel lessons! Check out the ideas in this Winter Solstice celebration post.

From a snowflake study, you can move easily to exploring other winter weather topics. Enjoy lessons on frosted leaves, icicles, beautiful frozen winter lakes at midnight and more with Nana. Your kids will see how snow, with its delicate, icy touch, creates beauty in all aspects of wintertime.

Along with our chalk pastel lessons, we added in a few other hands-on craft activities.

winter snowflake study

We were blessed beyond delight when the morning after painting our snow pictures with Nana, we had a suddenly snowfall! I handed out black construction paper and we rushed out to play Snowflake Bentley and collect our own snow crystals. Although I’m no photographer like he was, I managed to snap a few closeups to capture the detail of a handful of our flakes.

The boys and I studied my photos later, commenting on the shapes, edges, and variety in our small sampling. When we draw attention to the fleeting beauty of snow, we’re teaching children to pay attention to even the smallest of things. This skill of noticing is foundational to keep our children enthralled with learning.

Later in the week, the boys and I made snowflakes. Snowflake cutouts can be simple and fun to make. Since my husband’s family is Polish, every so often, we attempt the Polish paper cutting technique of Gwiazdy (or, stars). Very similar to cutting paper snowflakes, but with more detailed cut-out designs. Just like snowflakes, no two are ever the same, no matter how we might try!

winter snowflake study

We also designed snowflakes out of pipe cleaners. Extend this activity into a science lesson by making your own snow crystals! Kids can make actual crystal structures using a borax solution (especially wondrous if you live in an area that won’t have snow).

You might also enjoy a Silent Winter Snow Walk using your senses. Find out how with our sister site, Homeschool Nature Study’s Outdoor Hour Challenge Instagram post!

However you choose to study snowflakes, whether reading, painting, or crafting, there is no doubt snowflakes are one of nature’s most beautiful wonders. The melt-away beauty of snowflakes never fails to melt hearts of nature lovers everywhere.

Of all the forms of water the tiny six-pointed crystals of ice called snow are incomparably the most beautiful and varied. – Wilson Bentley

A Homeschool Lesson on Artist Steve Penley’s Statue of Liberty

This homeschool lesson has everything you need to learn more about artist Steve Penley and the Statue of Liberty he painted, including a chance to create your own work of art!

A Homeschool Lesson on Artist Steve Penley's Statue of Liberty : This homeschool lesson has everything you need to learn more about artist Steve Penley and the Statue of Liberty he painted, including a chance to create your own work of art! #onlineartlessons #chalkpastels #youareanartist #famousartists #statueofliberty #homeschoolart #artlessons #stevepenley

Steve Penley was born in Chattanooga, Tennessee, and is known for his explosions of color and historical paintings. While Steve Penley does his artwork with oil paints, Nana shows us how to create his iconic Statue of Liberty with chalk pastels! With this gorgeous painting, I thought it would be a lovely time to add in Nana’s other Statue of Liberty lesson that includes Ellis Island and make a homeschool study all about the Statue of Liberty.

Why is Lady Liberty green anyway?

A Homeschool Lesson on Artist Steve Penley's Statue of Liberty

Statue of Liberty Homeschool Study

With a couple of books on hand, we discovered that the Statue of Liberty is green because of the chemistry of copper. Yes, the Statue of Liberty is covered in a thin layer of copper which has turned green due to reactions with air and water. This green color is called patina.

I prefer to start with a few books for our unit studies, and if the children show more interest as we go along, I’ll find more books or videos on the subject.

Did you know that her official name is Liberty Enlightening the World?

One of the books we chose to start us on our learning adventure of Lady Liberty is the book What Is the Statue of Liberty? This book took us through the history and creation of this famous symbol of America. Lady Liberty was a gift from the people of France. She was designed by French sculptor Frederic Auguste Bartholdi and her framework was built by Gustave Eiffel. Eiffel is best known for the world-famous Eiffel Tower. (You could even continue your study with Nana’s Eiffel Tower lesson in World Landmarks).

Did you know the Statue of Liberty is mostly hollow?

Another book we chose to add to our homeschool study is When Jessie Came Across the Sea, which tells the lovely story of a young immigrant girl leaving her home for a better life in America. The sight of Lady Liberty gave the passengers of her ship such pause and awe as they entered the harbor, and the illustrations are breathtaking.

Lady Liberty was and is a tremendous beacon of hope and a symbol of welcome to immigrants arriving by sea.

Nana showed us step-by-step how to create our own Steve Penley version of Lady Liberty. She was so colorful and vibrant! With her Famous Artist online art course, Nana brought the Statue of Liberty and Steve Penley right into our home.

Then we recreated New York Harbor with the New York City skyline, the Statue of Liberty, and even boats in the water!

“Everything you can imagine is real.”

Pablo Picasso

Picasso was born in Malaga, Spain, and is widely acknowledged to be one of the most influential artists of the 20th century. He experimented with a wide range of styles, mediums, and themes throughout his career. Among many of his contributions to the history of art, his most important include pioneering a modern art movement called Cubism, inventing Collage as an artistic technique, and changing the way to sculpt…not in stone, but plastic! – Nana

Pablo Picasso

Picasso is considered one of the greatest artists of the 20th century, and it’s easy to see why! He was a genius that was painting like the master artists by the time he was fourteen years old. We dipped our toes into the art and life of Picasso with a couple of great books, Nana’s Famous Artist Picasso Modern Art lesson, and her Famous Artists podcast!

One of the books we chose was the DK Artists: Lives and Works. This is a gorgeous art history reference book that covers over 80 famous artists and their lives. DK Artists: Lives and Works is a book that your kids will return to throughout their art education!

Another book we chose was the Getting to Know the World’s Greatest Artists Pablo Picasso book. This is more of an elementary book, BUT this series of books are fantastic at getting your kids interested in the master artists. Getting to Know the World’s Greatest Artists is a fun book full of quirky facts and insightful details.

Did you know that Picasso had a pet Dachshund named Lump or that he enjoyed trying all sorts of foods from frog legs to eels? Pretty interesting facts, and my kids thought so too!

Medieval Themed Art Lessons with Chalk Pastels

Do your kiddos love dragons, and knights, and princesses? Or maybe you are studying the Medieval world this year with your history curriculum. The Middle ages were an interesting time. The Roman Empire had fallen, and smaller kingdoms were vying for control. There were Barbarian raiders, wars on faith, and the Black Death to contend with, but there were some pretty exciting inventions too! The printing press, flying buttresses in gothic architecture, eyeglasses, and knights in shining armor, to name a few!

Nana at Chalk Pastels has got you covered with oodles of Medieval times homeschool art lessons! We’ve done a few Medieval chalk pastels in the past, but she keeps adding more! All you need is a pack of construction paper, a starter set of chalk pastels, and the You Are An Artist Complete Clubhouse Membership to enjoy all that Nana has to offer!

Medieval Times Homeschool Art with Chalk Pastels

Medieval Castle Art Lesson

We started our Medieval unit study by gathering all of our visual encyclopedias to the table. My kiddos wanted to learn about castles. Did you know the Normans built the first castles in England? We learned quite a bit about castles, mainly how they evolved from earth and wood to thick stone walls, tall towers, and even moats!

Did you know that the largest castle in the world today by surface area is built of brick? It’s the Malbork castle in Poland and was created by the Teutonic Knights. I love learning interesting tidbits like this along with my kids!

Medieval Times Homeschool Art with Chalk Pastels

Medieval Dragon Homeschool Art Lesson

“There be DRAGONS in our chalk pastels!”

That’s what I declared loudly for the children. They LOVE dragons. We have ever so many books about dragons. So, it was a delightful surprise to see a dragon in our homeschool art lessons. Of course, in the Middle Ages, dragons were something to be feared, not celebrated.

Medieval Times Homeschool Art with Chalk Pastels

FYI: Nana has another art course for Mythical Creatures where she has a baby dragon hatching from its egg! Just in case you have dragon enthusiasts too.

We enjoyed the Court Dress, Catapult, Stained Glass, and Robin Hood art lessons. I may have given a sword to the fair lady of the court after my daughter complained that she had no weapon. Afterward, the kids said maybe she was Maid Marian of Robin Hood’s story, and she was robbing one of the wealthy nobles of the court, ha! Maybe it was Robin Hood himself in one of his many disguises!

My daughter created her stained glass window to look like a rose which I thought was pretty creative. Then we talked about the rose window in the Chartres Cathedral in France and their techniques to create the stained glass windows of the Middle ages. If you haven’t heard of the rose window before, be sure to look it up. It is beautiful!

Catapult Art Lesson for Homeschool

We would randomly yell, “CAT-A-PULT!” as if we were commanding an army of soldiers about to attack a castle keep while drawing our catapults. Then, we’d laugh at our silliness. Seriously folks, who yells, “CAT-A-PULT!” at the kitchen table while doing art? My kiddos and I do!

FYI, there are four types of catapults:

  • trebuchet
  • mangonel
  • onager
  • ballista

Nana also has courses for:

We had lots of fun with these Middle Ages history art lessons. Letting the kids be silly or adding their unique twist to a drawing is where the magic happens. Remember, they are learning even when yelling “CAT-A-PULT” at the kitchen table.

7 American History Homeschool Lessons Your Kids will Love

Are you looking for fun ways to incorporate American history homeschool lessons? Maybe you already have a history curriculum, but you’re looking for ways to make it more hands-on and engaging. Chalk pastels may be just what you need to get your kids to fall in love with history!

7 American History Homeschool Lessons Your Kids will Love: Are you looking for fun ways to incorporate American history homeschool lessons? Maybe you already have a history curriculum, but you're looking for ways to make it more hands-on and engaging. Chalk pastels may be just what you need to get your kids to fall in love with history!

Folks, my son LOVES history.

Well, he loves specific periods in history.

He’s just obsessed with World War II.

What’s a mom to do when her kid is only interested in one particular point in history OR, like many moms, have kids not interested in history at all?

I decided to let my kiddo dive as deeply as he wanted into the periods that interested him. While I occasionally strew other periods about for his delight. And guess what? It’s working! Strewing books, games, and even art, works! Sometimes it can be something as random as listening to the Hamilton musical or watching a documentary on current events that sparks a question that leads to a rabbit trail of discovery. The more questions asked, the more answers we lookup. Before you know it, we’re diving into George Washington, Paul Revere, Lewis and Clark, the Louisiana Purchase, Slavery, the Underground Railroad, and even John F. Kennedy!

George Washington Homeschool Art Lessons

I gathered up all of our encyclopedias and history books and laid them out on the table. My son casually mentioned George Washington. Sure enough, Nana has several George Washington lessons to choose from and 19 other American history lessons!

  • Revolutionary War uniforms – Continental soldier and British soldier
  • Boston Tea Party
  • Early colonists
  • 13 colonies – the gathering storm
  • White House
  • The Constitution
  • Women in War
  • Paul Revere
  • Lewis and Clark
  • Native Americans – Midwestern Tribes Headdresses
  • Napoleon
  • French Flag
  • War of 1812
  • Columbus
  • Harriet Tubman
  • Abraham Lincoln
  • Three Branches of Government
  • Alexander Hamilton
  • King George, III

This American history homeschool lesson silhouette of George Washington was super fun. We enjoy silhouettes because they’re easy enough for anyone to do. There is no detail to put in. Just draw the outline and then shade it in black! As we draw, we talk about who this historical figure was. What were his accomplishments? What were his faults?

Revolutionary War Online Art Lessons

Tea Party, anyone? How about the Boston Tea Party? My son asked how much the tea was worth that was thrown into the bay that fateful night. It turns out those 342 chests of tea were worth around $15,000!

7 American History Homeschool Lessons Your Kids will Love

Paul Revere’s Ride is another famous event! But we like to dig a little deeper when we find an interest. Did you know that on April 26, 1777, 16-year-old Sybil Ludington set off on a 40-mile ride to muster the militia in response to a British attack? She rode twice as far as Paul Revere. Did you also know that General George Washington personally thanked this brave girl after the battle? I didn’t realize until my son, and I discovered this gem of history. This is the kind of tidbit that gets my kiddo excited! We can pretend this hat, and lantern lesson is Paul Reveres or Sybil Ludington!

7 American History Homeschool Lessons Your Kids will Love

Lewis and Clark Homeschool Lessons

We explored the Lewis and Clark homeschool lessons after talking about the Louisiana Purchase. The journey and adventure they had were truly astounding. So many new discoveries were made on that trip! Thomas Jefferson was indeed pleased with his purchase after that!

7 American History Homeschool Lessons Your Kids will Love

And then my son asks an all-important question, ” How can the Europeans just arrive somewhere and say that it belongs to them now? How can they buy and sell land like that? The Native Americans were there first.”

Great question.

But, that is just another reason why it’s so important to learn about different periods of history and not just stay in the one period of history that interests you. All periods of history offer learning opportunities.

Also, you’ll notice that he wrote “Swamp” instead of Spain on Florida… I laughed so hard when I saw what he wrote!

Harriet Tubman American History Homeschool Study

My son’s favorite American history homeschool lesson was that of Harriet Tubman. He’s read several books about her and watched several documentaries about her. He loved the I Drew It Then I Knew It History workbook about her too. It offered some fast facts and a short biography that he thoroughly enjoyed. Harriet Tubman was indeed a remarkable woman! Now my son is excited to learn more about the Civil War and the Underground Railroad!

John F. Kennedy Modern U.S. History Lesson

The You ARE An Artist Complete Clubhouse Membership also has a plethora of American Presidents art lessons to choose from, including:

George Washington
John Adams
Thomas Jefferson
James Madison
James Monroe
Abraham Lincoln
Lincoln Portrait – Aaron Copland
Ulysses S. Grant
President Benjamin Harrison – First Christmas Tree in White House
Theodore Roosevelt
John F. Kennedy
Franklin D. Roosevelt

I asked my son if he was interested in learning more about any of them, and without skipping a beat, he said, John F. Kennedy. Lucky for us, there is a chalk pastel lesson of him hunched over a writing desk. You can see the weight of the nation on his shoulders.

7 American History Homeschool Lessons Your Kids will Love

While American history isn’t always pretty, it does need to be explored by young and old alike. It’s important to understand where we came from, what decisions got us to where we are now, and how we move forward. It’s essential to learn about key historical figures and even some that, while not as famous was just as instrumental in weaving the tapestry of our nation.

Encourage your kiddos to ask questions. Help them to find answers. Continue to dig a little deeper for as long as they are interested. Let Nana’s chalk pastel lessons make learning about American history fun and engaging even if history isn’t your child’s favorite subject!
