Pets and Preschoolers
Preschoolers tend to love pets, whether real, stuffed animals, or entirely imaginary. They may enjoy playing outside with their dog, raising baby chicks into fun backyard chickens, or watching fish swim and hide in an aquarium.
If they do not have a real pet, they often use stuffed animals and pretend they are real. They give them names, take them places, and create adventures in their minds.
Given this enjoyment of pets, pets make a great theme for preschool art activities. They can paint the pets they have, the ones they want to have, or just a variety of fun animals.
When discussing pets, people often think about dogs, cats, and maybe fish. However, there are many options for animals that can be considered pets. Backyard chickens, turtles, frogs, and lambs are among just a few of the less often considered pets.
Real Pet Art Lessons for Preschoolers
Cat Silhouette: Located in the animals course, the cat silhouette is a fun drawing for children who love cats. This lesson teaches students to draw a cat from several different angles.
Baby Animals: The Baby Animals course is full of great options for pet art. The most common pet ones would be the puppy and kitten. However, you could also have a lamb or duckling as a pet. The seal pup would be an unlikely pet, but it is still a fun painting for those preschoolers.
Preschool Barnyard Course: This is one of my absolute favorite art courses for preschoolers. The baby chick lesson is so simple and cute. There is also a really fun barnyard animals lesson with a chicken, sheep, pig, and donkey.
The Pond Course: Does your child love going for walks and finding turtles or frogs? My boys always ended up bringing home critters and keeping them for a day or two before we released them again. The pond course is the perfect pet course for those children. It has a fun bullfrog lesson as well as a turtle lesson.
Imaginary Pet Art Lessons for Preschoolers
Teasel Pets: This art lesson is a delightful craft located in the animals course that allows children to create their own imaginary pet using a teasel. (If you don’t have teasels, there are other natural materials you could substitute.) It is such a fun, hands-on way to enjoy nature and pets. As an added bonus, you get a pet you don’t have to remember to feed!
Dinosaur: Would it be fun to have a dinosaur as a pet? Many young children would be thrilled to imagine having their very own dinosaur. This fun drawing allows them to draw and name their pet dinosaur. You can find this painting in Nana’s animal course.
Dragon: Dragons appear in so many wonderful children’s stories that it is no wonder many children like to imagine having their own dragon. This colorful and fun chalk pastel painting is located in the medieval history course.
There are so many fun ideas for pet art lessons for preschoolers, whether real or imaginary. These art lessons can help students combine their interest in animals with their art projects. They can even give their new paintings names, and you could make up adventures with them together.
