Learning about ants can be quite fascinating! Whether they march in procession across our countertops or sneak into our picnic baskets, they are everywhere and part of our everyday experience.
Teaching Children About Ants
Have you ever heard of a species called Carebara atoma? How about Dinoponera gigenta? Do you know what a myrmecologist studies?
The answer to all of these questions has everything to do with ANTS!
As we dig deeper into the nature of these tiny creatures, we see just how captivating ants really are! These invertebrates are also neat to observe and are extremely hard workers. They work together like a family and each ant has an important job to fulfill. When the ants complete their duties, it naturally makes their colony run smoothly. Who knew we could glean from ants! It’s fascinating to note that ant colonies even have nurse ants to care for and protect their young.
Ants also defend and protect their comrades, the aphids. Aphids eat plant sap and after being stroked by an ant’s antennae, the aphids produce honey dew that feed and nourish the ants! In turn, the ants will show their devotion by defending and protecting their aphid friends! Wow! What interesting facts! However, with over 15,000 species confirmed, there is still so much to learn about the intriguing world of this tiny insect! Let’s follow the ant trail and see what more we can discover!
