Defy gravity with these Wicked homeschool activities even the Wizard of Oz would love! Includes beautiful art lessons to celebrate the book, the Broadway play and the movie!
Growing up, I always looked forward to watching The Wizard of Oz movie with Nana and my brother. It was an annual event. I even had Cowardly Lion, Dorothy, Scarecrow and Tin Man figures I played with long after the movie ended.
It was magical to me. I especially loved when with Dorothy’s arrival to Oz, the movie went from black and white to full technicolor.
Fast forward to when I was raising my own children. We, also, would watch The Wizard of Oz. Nana got to travel to New York City with friends and see Wicked on Broadway!
My own daughters played Glinda and the Cowardly Lion in their homeschool drama troupe. THEN, Nana and us girls all got to go to the Fox Theater in Atlanta and see Wicked.
Recently, our whole family took Nana to see the Wicked movie. It felt like coming full circle.

Learning About Tornadoes
Nana painted this gorgeous, deep purple tornado in one of her classes! Doesn’t it look like the one that Dorothy and Toto saw in Kansas? Nana shares a tornado video art lesson as well. It is a perfect way to learn about tornadoes, how they form and the lightning that might come with the storm.
You could even paint Dorothy’s house swirling in the tornado!
Field of Poppies in the Style of Claude Monet
This is an “impressionistic” painting. It is an impression of a field, flowers and sky. It is not exact and that is exactly what makes it fun!
Poppies Art For Kids
Nana created this lovely poppy art lesson in observance of Veterans Day. There is a rich history you can learn about with this lesson! Of course, you can also paint poppies in honor of Wicked and the Wizard of Oz. Poppies are a big part of these stories. You can also paint a field of poppies in the style of Claude Monet in Nana’s famous artists series.
Broom Activity for Kids
This is, of course, Harry Potter’s firebolt broom. But we know that Elphaba or the Wicked Witch of the West would love this style of broom too! So, please enjoy and adapt for Wicked or The Wonderful Wizard of Oz.
